Reasons to celebrate Australia

Today – January 26 – is Australia Day, aka Aussie National Day. With this in mind, Kaye Holland reveals eight reasons why she loves the country that introduced her to backpacking

The brown stuff might look dodgy in the jar but the taste is so strong and salty, how could you not love it?! Here at JAT HQ we’re huge fans of vegemite which launched back in 1922, and believe that the Aussie invention is infinitely superior to its stable mate, marmite. Don’t believe us? Just taste…

Much like Marilyn, Ms Minogue is famous enough to be known by only her first name and righty so: from her sartorial style and sensational singing career to her turn as TV judge onThe Voice, the adorable Aussie has got star quality in spades. Kylie may have been around for more than 25 years but, to paraphrase one of her greatest hits, we can’t get her out of our heads…

The weather
Britain may be battling the big freeze but in Australia it’s hot, hot, hot! And the good weather isn’t solely reserved for summer. The Land Down Under enjoys sunshine 360 days of the year. Jealous, us? Guilty as charged.

The beaches
Oz is blessed with beautiful, bounty advert beaches from Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach to Byron Bay and the spectacular Whitsunday Islands – where the fine white sand looks like the kind of place you’d see Bond wading ashore in his Speedos – to Western Australia’s lovely Rottnest Island. Got your passport?

Tim Tams
Hands up if you’ve tried a Tim Tam? If not, you’re missing out my friend for Tim Tams are a one-way ticket to bliss. This chocolate treat (think two chocolate biscuits sandwiched together with – what else – chocolate) is to Australia what Victoria Sponge is to Britain or Apple pie is to America. The stats say it all: one in every two Aussie households contains a packet of Tim Tams and around 35 million packs are sold each year!

Let’s face it: Aussie soaps such as Neighbours and Home and Away are utterly addictive. Summer Bay and Ramsay Street are responsible for the likes of Liam and Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher and Margot Robbie who recently swapped Melbourne’s most famous street for a role in the Martin Scorsese Oscar nominated film, The Wolf of Wall Street.

The second best selling beer in the UK is – rather bizarrely – not particularly popular Down Under. The Aussies love their lager but tend to choose Tooheys New and Victoria Bitter. All of which means that there are more cans of cold Fosters for us poms to enjoy today. Dry January? We seem to have missed the memo…

Hugh Jackman
Whether he is showing off his vocal range in Les Misérables or his biceps as Wolverine, the Aussie actor never fails to impress. He’s also a hands on Dad to his two adopted children and an adoring husband (“From day one, we were best mates,” he says of his 58 year old wife, Deborra-Lee Furness). It’s official: we’ve got a crush.

Happy Birthday Rihanna!

The sultry singer - one of Student365‘s favourite stars - is celebrating her 26th birthday today. Here's five reasons why RiRi rocks

She's honest

“I think honesty is the ultimate liberation in life," says Rihanna. "People want to shy away from the truth and keep sweeping it under the rug.”

She's a style icon

Whether she is wearing a hoodie or haute couture, RiRi always looks awesome. Having collaborated with River Island in the past, word is that the Umbrella singer will be launching her own fashion line soon. Three words: CAN. NOT. WAIT!

She’s a record breaker

Rihanna became only the third artist ever to scoop seven number one singles in seven years – and the first female star to do so - when Monster, her collaboration with Eminem, hit the top spot in November 2013.

She stays true to her roots

The star hasn’t forgotten where she is from, showcasing the Bajan flag in many of her music videos. Barbados is proud of the girl formerly known as Robyn Fenty too: every year the Caribbean island celebrates ‘Rihanna Day’ on February 22.

She's grounded

When in London Rihanna shuns taking a limo or black cab to her concerts at the 02 Arena, preferring to keep it real by taking the tube instead. Happy Birthday Rihanna - we salute you.

Five prominent gay sports personalities

Five sports stars who came out of the closet

Last week Thomas Hitzlsperger became the most high profile footballer to come out. The former Aston Villa and Everton player revealed to German paper, Die Zeit, that he was gay because he wants "to further the debate about homosexuality among sports professionals".

Following on from Hitzlsperger’s announcement, here are five other prominent sports stars who have come out to the world

Martina Navratilova
The first openly homosexual tennis player, Martina came out in 1981 after gaining US citizenship. The nine times Wimbledon champion was the recipient of the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay and lesbian activist/lobbying group, in 2000.

Jason Collins
The American basketball star came out on the cover of Sports Illustrated in May 2013 saying: “I’m a 34 year old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.” The 34 year old is pro basketball’s first openly gay player but, despite his 12 year experience with six different teams, is still without a contract for the new season forcing us to ask: are NBA teams passing on signing Jason Collins the basketball player, or Jason Collins the openly gay athlete?

Tom Daley
The popular Olympic diver and Splash star came out of the closet in December 2012 when he revealed – via a YouTube video – that he's in a relationship with another man. Kylie Minogue was one of the first celebs to show her support tweeting that she found Tom “inspiring and brave.”

Robbie Rogers
The former Leeds United player told the world about his sexuality in a statement on his website in February 2013. “"People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay,” he wrote. Rogers retired immediately, before joining LA Galaxy just three months later.

Gareth Thomas
The Welsh rugby legend – Thomas represented his country in both codes of rugby – famously announced he was gay in 2009 and a year later, received Stonewall's Hero of the Year award. Fast forward to 2014 and Gareth – the third most capped Welsh rugby union player, with 100 Test caps and a further three playing for the British & Irish Lions – is set to be portrayed by Hollywood heavyweight Mickey Rourke in a biopic about his decision to come out as gay.
